Vrijheid als essentiële politieke waarde heeft bij veel filosofen een belangrijke rol te vervullen. Het is hierbij belangrijk te definiëren wat deze (politieke) vrijheid precies inhoudt en een onderscheid te maken tussen politieke vrijheid en vrijheid in termen van vrije wil en determinisme. Ongeacht of vrije wil bestaat, kan er immers nog steeds politieke vrijheid zijn.
